About
Vavla has fewer than fifty permanent residents but it's been designated a Preserved Village — the white stone houses, the traditional features, the quiet medieval layout are all officially protected. It stands in a quiet patch of the Larnaca foothills below Stavrovouni, signposted on old French maps from 1367 as 'Vala'. The village is best known today for beekeeping — wildflower and thyme honey from the slopes around the village is some of the best on the island — and for the Eco Physis project that runs honey-making workshops for visitors. Two small churches anchor the village (Agios Georgios and Archangelos Michail), and a short drive out of the village brings you to the fifteenth-century Agios Minas convent, an unusual blend of Byzantine and Gothic styles where the nuns paint icons and make traditional Cypriot sweets. Sleepy, photogenic, and a natural base for exploring the wider Lefkara cluster.
