Skarinou

Athienou is unusual on this list — one of only four villages located entirely inside the UN-monitored buffer zone that runs through Cyprus, a sizeable working community of around 5,000 just south of the Green Line, on the plain between Larnaca and Nicosia. The village's modern reputation rests on food: Athienou is one of the most respected halloumi producers on the island, with several family dairies you can visit, and its bread (Athienitiko) and pastries have a quiet cult following. The pre-modern history runs deep — the village sits on the site of the ancient city-kingdom of Golgoi, and the Davidson College archaeological project has been digging at Athienou-Malloura since 1990. The Kallinikeio Municipal Museum displays finds from the dig alongside a folk-art collection. Three of the village churches (Panagia Chryseleoussa, Agios Fokas, Agios Georgios) hold notable icons and frescoes. A nice contrast to the mountain villages: flat plains, dairy farms, and a long, complicated border story.

Choirokoitia is the village built next to the most important prehistoric site in Cyprus — a UNESCO-listed Neolithic settlement that has been continuously studied for nearly a century and that has rewritten what we know about the eastern Mediterranean's first farmers. The site itself is the headline: thick defensive walls, the foundations of round stone houses (tholoi) clustered against the hill, and five full reconstructions outside the original walls that let you walk into a dwelling and see how families lived between the seventh and the fourth millennium BC. Plan an hour or two and bring a hat — the path climbs the hill in full sun. The modern village around the site is a working Larnaca foothills community of around six hundred people, with a few small coffee shops and tavernas at the foot of the hill. Tochni is two kilometres south for lunch; the coast is twenty minutes away.

Kornos sits in the Larnaca foothills at the centre of the triangle formed by Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca — a village that has been a road junction since at least the Frankish period (referred to as 'Corno' in medieval texts). It is best known on the island for one craft: handmade clay pottery in the traditional Cypriot style. A handful of working potters' workshops still operate in the village, throwing the same earthenware shapes — pitharia (storage jars), pots, jugs, dishes — that have been made here for centuries. The other local specialty is honey, from a strong beekeeping tradition. The agricultural land grows citrus fruit, olives, and carobs. The traditional folk architecture has survived well: tiled roofs, stone walls, arches, and original wooden door shutters. The main village church of Agios Ioannis the Baptist, built in the early nineteenth century in an unusual Gothic style, holds a 1734 icon of the saint.

Psematismenos — the name means 'lied to' or 'deceived' in Greek, with a folk-etymology origin nobody is quite sure of — is a small, peaceful agricultural village in the Larnaca foothills, halfway between Larnaca and Limassol just inland from the south coast. The village has the warm honey-coloured stone of the surrounding region, narrow lanes, and a quiet handful of restored agritourism guesthouses that make it a calm rural retreat without the polish (or the crowds) of more developed nearby villages. The slopes around are planted in citrus fruit, olives, and carobs, with prehistoric finds in the surrounding area suggesting continuous habitation for thousands of years. The village's anchor monument is the church of Agia Marina, originally sixteenth century, rebuilt in 1886, with an 1850 iconostasis and an interior of old frescoes worth a stop. The beach is fifteen minutes away.

Kato Drys means 'lower oak' — fitting for a Larnaca foothills village hidden in narrow valleys where the Agios Minas river runs cold and the slopes are still planted in almonds, olives, and carobs. It's tiny: a hundred-odd residents, lanes lined with flowers, and just enough infrastructure for a weekend's slow exploration. The village punches well above its weight on museums for the size — there's a Rural Museum and a wonderful little Bee and Embroidery Museum that traces the local tradition of beekeeping (Kato Drys honey from thyme and wildflower is exceptional) alongside the lefkaritika lace also practised here, next door to its more famous neighbour. Two churches anchor the village: the fifteenth-century Panagia Eleousa and the nineteenth-century Agios Charalambos. In July the village hosts the Feggaros music festival, one of the best small-stage line-ups of the Cypriot summer. Otherwise it's lazy mornings, coffee, and walking the river.
