About
Polis Chrysochous — just 'Polis' to anyone who lives there — is the laid-back gateway to the wild Akamas peninsula, a small market town with a palm-lined square, family-run tavernas, and the kind of slow pace that has kept it a favourite of return visitors for decades. The eucalyptus-shaded campsite at the edge of town opens onto a Blue Flag pebble beach, and the coastal path from there leads to Latchi harbour, twenty minutes' walk along the bay. Latchi is where you eat the fresh fish the area is known for, and where boats leave for the Blue Lagoon, Aphrodite's Baths, and the cliffs of the Akamas. Inland from the square, the church of Agios Andronikos holds restored sixteenth-century frescoes (covered in plaster during Ottoman rule, painstakingly uncovered by the Antiquities Department after 1974). The area sits on the ancient kingdoms of Marion and Arsinoe; the small Archaeological Museum is worth an hour.
