About
Pano Panagia is the high mountain village at 850 metres in the Pafos hills where Archbishop Makarios III — the first president of the Republic of Cyprus and one of the towering figures of twentieth-century Cypriot history — was born in 1913. Two small museums in the village preserve his story: his family home, and the Cultural Foundation Archbishop Makarios III museum nearby. Beyond Makarios, the village's other major anchor is the Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery, a 12th-century Byzantine foundation a short drive from the village that holds an extraordinary icon-and-utensil treasury and stages a major religious festival on August 14. Vouni Panayias, the local viticultural zone, is considered by many connoisseurs the finest in Cyprus, and the village hosts multiple wineries you can visit for tastings. The three-hour Vouni Panagias Nature Trail starts from the village square. The Ta Rogiatika festival on August 15 brings music, dance, and local food.
