About
Pano Lefkara is the village Cyprus put on its money. Climb the silica-white streets — the name means 'white mountains' — past terracotta-roofed houses and you'll see what made it famous: women sitting in doorways embroidering lefkaritika, the intricate cut-and-drawn lace that earned UNESCO Intangible Heritage status. Legend has it Leonardo da Vinci stopped here in 1481 and bought an altar cloth for Milan Cathedral; whether or not that's true, the technique has been passed down unbroken since Venetian times. The other local craft is filigree silver, sold from family workshops where the smiths still hammer by hand. Wander the upper village for the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing, the Church of Timios Stavros, and a small folklore museum. Stay for lunch — the meze tavernas here are excellent — and don't leave without trying loukoumi, the rosewater Turkish-delight-style sweet the village also makes.
