About
Pano Arodes sits on the Laona plateau at 590 metres, right on the edge of the Akamas Nature Reserve and looking down over the wild northern coast. The medieval name was simply 'Rhodes' — the village belonged to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, whose seat sat on the island of Rhodes until 1522. The traditional stone houses, the vineyards and orchards that wrap the village, and the views down to Lara Beach below all reward a slow wander. The main eighteenth-century church is dedicated to Agios Kalandion (Kelandion), an early bishop of Paphos — and is reputedly the only church in the world dedicated to him. Two stone sarcophagi flank it: legend has it that powdered stone from St Agapiticos's tomb, slipped into a drink, will earn you a lover's affection — and stone from St Misiticos's will end the affair. The neighbouring Kato Arodes was largely abandoned after 1974.
