About
Odou is the highest village in the entire Larnaca district — 850 metres up in the southern foothills of Troodos, on the border with the Limassol and Nicosia provinces — and one of the most picturesque, traditional villages in this part of the island. The name comes from the Greek 'odos' (street): a main artery of the Roman road network from Tamasos to Amathus once passed through here, and the village kept the name even after the Romans left. The pine slopes around the village are wild and beautiful, and the elevation makes for a cool retreat from the coast in summer. The village is known on the island for its tomatoes (the flavour is famously excellent — high-altitude tomatoes are a thing here) and for its wooden-roofed eighteenth-century chapel of Agia Marina, founded in 1777. Population is small (around 200) and the pace is correspondingly slow.
