About
Lysos is the largest village in the Pafos region by area — 10,000 acres of forest, scrubland, and orchards stretching from 560 metres at the village core up to the 1,362-metre Tripylos summit on the Nicosia border. The village is the natural southern gateway to Stavros tis Psokas, the largest contiguous Pafos forest, and its real draw is wildlife: this is the best place on the island to spot the rare endemic Cyprus mouflon (a kind of wild sheep, protected and elusive) along with Bonelli's eagle and other raptors. The forest service runs a mouflon enclosure at the Stavros tis Psokas station, and several marked nature trails set out into the forest from the village. The village itself is small (around 200 people) and quiet, with the late-fifteenth-century church of Panagia Chryseleousa as its anchor. Locally the place is also known for one delicacy: Maxilles, a dried-fig sweet often eaten with almonds or walnuts.
