About

Kritou Terra is one of the prettiest of the Laona plateau villages — built at 470 metres around the third-biggest natural spring on the island, which keeps the surroundings green even in high summer. The whitewashed houses sit on terraces with mountains behind and the Chrysochou Gulf spread out below. Two of the most beautiful agritourism guesthouses on the island are based here, in restored Ottoman-era stone houses, and the village is a quiet base for both the Akamas and the Pafos coast. There's a restored Ottoman hammam (one of the few left in southern Cyprus) and a small but unusual claim to fame: Kritou Terra had Cyprus's first 'casino' under Ottoman rule in the nineteenth century, and rare folk-art murals from that building still survive on a village wall. The main village church is Panagia Chryseleousa; the older Agia Aikaterini, three kilometres out, opens once a year for the saint's day.
