About
Kathikas sits at 700 metres on the Laona plateau in the Pafos hills, a small wine-making village that's quietly become one of the most engaging stops in the west. The grape that defines it is xynisteri, the indigenous white that has driven the renaissance of Cypriot dry wine — Sterna and Vasilikon, two of the most respected boutique wineries on the island, are both based here and both welcome visitors for tastings. The village itself is over a century of restored folkloric architecture: stone houses with wooden balconies, several small churches, narrow lanes that empty into wide views of the Akamas peninsula stretching out to the sea. A small donkey sanctuary at the edge of the village adds an unexpected charm. Kathikas is twenty minutes inland from the coast and a natural launching point for the Avakas Gorge hike, the Akamas trails, and the Lara turtle beach further north.
