About
Inia (sometimes Ineia, originally Oinia from the Greek for wine) climbs the Laona slopes above the Akamas with panoramic views across the peninsula to the sea. It's a small wine-grape grower on the Laona-Akamas route — vineyards run right up to the edge of the village — but the local tradition that brings curious visitors is basket-weaving, still practised the way it always has been, with a dedicated village museum displaying the woven baskets, mats, and household objects of the craft. Beyond that, Inia is a place to walk and look. The landscape is unusually photogenic, with old stone houses set against the long view, and several painters and photographers have made the village their working base. The Akamas walking trails fan out from the road below, and the Avakas Gorge — one of the most dramatic short hikes in Cyprus — is a short drive west.
