About

Sotira is one of the agricultural 'Kokkinochoria' (red-soil villages) of the Famagusta region — a cluster of villages that share the same iron-rich red earth and the food culture that grows out of it. Sotira's particular crops are juicy watermelons, figs, pomegranates, and kolokasi (taro root), and the village celebrates the last with an annual Kolokasi Festival in September. The village was founded in the Byzantine period and named after Jesus the Saviour ('Sotiros Christou'). The standout monument is the sixteenth-century Metamorphosis tou Sotiros church in the village centre with its small Ecclesiastical Museum, but five other medieval churches dating from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries dot the village and the immediate surroundings, including the unusual cruciform Panagia Chordakion. The Traditional Festival of Sotira in late June and the Feast of the Saviour on August 6 are the village's two big panigyri.
