About
Pano Platres is Cyprus's classic mountain resort — a belle époque hill station that took off in the late nineteenth century when the British colonial administration came up here to escape the summer heat, and that still feels like a Greek-Cypriot version of an Alpine village. It sits at 1,100 metres on the southern slopes of Troodos, a short drive from the Mount Olympus ski lifts. The Caledonia Falls trail, one of the most rewarding short walks in Cyprus, drops out of the village through plane-tree forest to a thirteen-metre waterfall — the steady rush of cold water gives the village its surrounding micro-climate. Pano Platres made it into a famous poem by Nobel laureate Giorgos Seferis ('the nightingales won't let you sleep in Platres'), and the Cultural Centre keeps his connection on display. There's a chocolate workshop, a rope adventure park for kids, and a string of trout restaurants. Cypriots have summered here for over a century, and the hotels — some original, some recently restored — still fill up every weekend.
