Pedoulas

Πεδουλάς · Pedula

About

Pedoulas sits at 1,100 metres deep in the Marathasa Valley, surrounded by cherry orchards that turn the slopes pink in spring and red in early summer. It's the highest alpine village on the cherry route and the air really does feel different — cooler, thinner, scented with pine. The village holds one of the ten UNESCO-listed Painted Churches: the small Archangel Michael, built in 1474, contains some of the most vivid late-Byzantine frescoes in Cyprus, with the donor portrait of the village priest still visible above the door. The Pedoulas Byzantine Museum next door fills in the context with icons from churches across the valley. Walk down the lanes for the Folk Art Museum, taste the cherry liqueur (and the cherry preserves, the cherry brandy, and the cherry-anything-else), and fill a bottle at the natural spring — locals will tell you it's the secret of long life. Excellent walking base, and right on the road up to Mount Olympus.
