About

Palaichori sits at 930 metres in the Pitsilia foothills, split in two by the Serrache river that springs from Mount Papoutsa above. The headline is the sixteenth-century Metamorphosis tou Sotiros church, one of the ten UNESCO Painted Churches in Troodos — its frescoes are unusually well preserved, with figures that face the viewer in the late-Byzantine style. Beyond the church, the village runs on its own quiet rhythm: vineyards, nut and fruit trees, and a long tradition of distilling zivania (the local pomace spirit) and making soutzoukos (the chewy grape-must sweets strung on a thread). A Byzantine Heritage Museum sits next to the church, and a short drive out of the village brings you to the restored EOKA hideout of Gregoris Afxentiou — a piece of the modern history layered onto the older religious one. Palaichori Dam below the village is a quiet spot for an afternoon's fishing.
