About

Tucked into the southern slopes of Troodos at 800 metres, Omodos is the unofficial capital of Krasochoria, Cyprus's mountain wine country. Cobbled lanes radiate out from a wide stone square where the monastery of Timios Stavros sits guarding a relic said to be a fragment of the True Cross — its carved iconostasis and centuries-old icons are reason enough to climb the hill. The streets between are lined with whitewashed stone houses, ten-plus tasting rooms, a medieval wine press still in place, and small museums dedicated to the local lace-making and the EOKA struggle. The village bakes its own arkatena bread, distils zivania, and ferments grapes the way it always has. Time your visit for September 14 if you can — the Feast of the Holy Cross fills the square with food stalls and music for three days, the biggest religious fair on the island.
