About
Lythrodontas sits at the foot of the Machairas mountain in the Nicosia foothills, 31 kilometres south of the capital, and is surrounded by what is reputedly the greatest concentration of olive trees anywhere on the island. The local olive oil is excellent — many of the village's restored stone houses now run as olive-themed agritourism, and an old flour mill and olive mill in the village have been restored as a kind of working museum, with a virtual-reality tour of the old village customs. Beyond olives, Lythrodontas is the natural launching point for Machairas Monastery, one of the most important and beautifully sited monasteries in Cyprus, deep in the surrounding forest. Hiking trails to Machairas and beyond start from above the village. Several worthwhile churches in the village (Agios Therapontas, Archangelos Michael, Agios Georgios, Panagia) plus the older Monastery of Prophet Elias to the south-west round out the visit.
