About
Louvaras sits at 850 metres on the southern slopes of Troodos, just 28 kilometres up from Limassol, in the foothills of the Pitsilia region. The headline is a tiny stone-built church most visitors miss — Agios Mamas, dating to 1495, is decorated with one of the best-preserved post-Byzantine fresco cycles in the area, painted by the same workshop responsible for the Galata churches. Beyond the church, Louvaras is one of the historic wine villages of the Commandaria zone — under Frankish rule the village belonged to the Knights Hospitaller's Grand Commandery at Kolossi, and the village has been producing the celebrated dessert wine ever since. The traditional stone-built houses with wooden balconies and tile roofs cluster around the church and an old olive press that has been restored. The Kakomallis picnic site six kilometres out makes a pretty lunch stop in oak forest.
