About

Laneia, twenty-five kilometres up from Limassol, has become something of an artists' colony — Cypriot and international painters keep studios behind the bougainvillea-covered courtyards, and a handful of small galleries dot the lanes. The village sits at 570 metres on the southern foothills of Troodos and is firmly in wine country: legend names it after Lana, daughter of Dionysus, and the grape-growing tradition runs deep. There's an old wine press in the square, an olive press at the edge of the village, and a small Commandaria Storage Museum that explains why this fortified dessert wine — produced here for nearly a thousand years — was once a favourite at European royal courts. Wander the lanes for the Panagia Valana church and the chapel just outside the village, then time a visit for May, when the women of Laneia throw open their courtyards to visitors during the 'Lanes and Courtyards' weekend.
