About
Lagoudera is one of the most remote of the curated villages, tucked into a fold of the Pitsilia mountains under Madari peak — Cyprus's second-highest summit. Population is well under 100, the houses are stone, and the silence is real. The reason to come is the church of Panagia tou Arakou just outside the village — a small twelfth-century domed monastery covered, inside and out, with extraordinary fresco cycles considered (alongside Asinou and Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis) among the finest Byzantine churches on the island. The 1192 frescoes are by a master painter trained in Constantinople and represent the high point of the late-Komnenian style. It is a UNESCO Painted Church but receives far fewer visitors than the more accessible ones. The drive up is part of the experience — the road winds through pine forest with long valley views. Combine with the trailhead to the Madari ridge for a long walking day.
