About
Kyperounta is the highest sizeable village in Cyprus — 1,300 metres up, the third-highest settlement on the island, with about 1,500 year-round residents and a working-village feel rare at this altitude. The slopes around are planted in apple and cherry orchards (you'll see the fruit by the roadside in season) and the village has a real Pitsilia-mountain character: uphill streets, picturesque lofts, small yards. The headline winery is Tsiakkas — one of the most respected boutique producers in Cyprus, working with high-altitude vineyards that ripen weeks later than the coast. There are three small museums in the village (Natural History, Folk Art, and the National Liberation Struggle), the eighteenth-century Agia Marina church in the old centre, and the imposing newer Agios Arsenios. Two excellent walks start from the village: the Doksa soi o Theos trail and Teisia tis Madaris, both of which loop through pine forest with big mountain views. Cool air, real altitude, and a good base for Pitsilia.
