About

Kalopanagiotis is the spa village of the Marathasa Valley, a green crease in northern Troodos where the Setrachos river runs cold past sulphur springs that have drawn bathers since Byzantine times. The village core is all tiled rooftops, cobbled footpaths, and wooden balconies climbing the slope; the recently restored Casale Panayiotis hotel cluster has made it one of the most polished wellness destinations on the island. The real treasure is the monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis below the village — a UNESCO Painted Church holding three connected naves of frescoes from the eleventh to the fifteenth century, considered among the most important Byzantine art in Cyprus. Walk the sixteenth-century Venetian stone bridge to reach it, and stop at the old Kykko watermill on the way. The forested ridges above offer some of the prettiest nature trails on the island, and the village makes a good base for hitting both Pedoulas and Moutoullas.
