About
Kakopetria sits at 667 metres on the northern shoulder of Troodos, the highest village in the Solea Valley and one of the few mountain settlements that stays lively year-round. The Kargotis river runs straight through the old quarter — a protected heritage site of stone-paved alleys, restored timber balconies, and three-storey houses leaning over the water. The big draw is five kilometres up the valley: Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, the eleventh-century church with the steeply pitched protective roof, is one of the ten UNESCO-listed Painted Churches and holds frescoes that span six centuries. Back in the village, the restored Mylos tis Gonias watermill grinds barley like it did in 1754, and a string of riverside tavernas turn out trout caught in the local hatcheries. Cool enough to wear a jumper at night even in August — Nicosians come up here all summer to escape the plain.
