About
Gourri sits at the foot of the Machairas mountain in Pitsilia, 36 kilometres south of Nicosia, on the same back road that leads to the famous Fikardou. Founded around 800 AD (legend traces the name either to the Kourries clan or to a Frankish feudal lord, Jacob de Gourr), the village still has the quiet, stone-built character of a Troodos backcountry settlement. The Folk Art Museum (opened in 2015) is worth a half-hour, and the village church of Agios Georgios has a beautifully preserved 1906 iconostasis. The thing visitors come back with, though, is jars of glyka tou koutaliou — fruits and vegetables preserved in syrup — made by the local women and sold from a few houses around the square. Easy to combine with Fikardou (five minutes away) and Machairas Monastery a bit further on, making a satisfying half-day loop into the high Nicosia countryside.
