About
Galata is the village just below Kakopetria in the Solea Valley, 620 metres up, and it's the entry point to a remarkable cluster of small frescoed churches. The big one is Panagia tis Podithou, just outside the village — a sixteenth-century timber-roofed church on the UNESCO Painted Churches list, with elegant Italo-Byzantine frescoes that bring Renaissance influence into the mountain tradition. The Archangel Michael Pedoulas (a different building from the one further up the valley) and Agios Sozomenos sit nearby, all worth visiting in the same morning. The village itself is a relaxed agricultural community known on the island for its summer-fruit produce, and Cypriot families have always come up here to escape the heat. The Karkotis river runs cold past the village; the road keeps climbing to Kakopetria and on into the high Troodos.
