About

Evrychou is the agricultural anchor of the Solea Valley — a sizeable working village 50 kilometres south-west of Nicosia, on the river Karkotis, with old stone houses, tile-roofed lofts, wooden balconies, and a long history of growing apples. The village's small but charming Cyprus Railways Museum, housed in the original train station, tells the story of the long-defunct CGR (Cyprus Government Railway, 1905-51) that once carried freight from Famagusta up here to the foothills, with original drawings, photos, and rolling-stock scale models. The Mill of Styllis water-mill outside the village is a fine example of pre-industrial folk architecture. Beyond all that, Evrychou is the natural staging post for the whole upper Solea — Kakopetria, Galata, and the cluster of Painted Churches are all a short drive up the valley road.
