About
Doros is a small Limassol mountain village in the heart of the Commandaria production zone — 470 metres up on a hill, surrounded by almond trees and grapevines, with around 150 residents who are still mostly working farmers tending livestock and fruit orchards. The name probably derives from the ancient Greek 'doris' meaning forest — the surrounding hillsides were once thickly wooded oak. The village's significance for visitors is mostly in the wine: this is one of fourteen villages historically permitted to produce Commandaria, the celebrated fortified dessert wine that traces its lineage to the medieval Knights Hospitaller. Tastings of the village's almond and grape products, including the regional speciality of bitter-almond liqueur, are worth seeking out at a couple of family producers. The village is hidden enough that you almost have to mean to find it — but is just 25 kilometres up from Limassol on the road into Troodos.
