About

Askas is a small Pitsilia village at 900 metres on the northern flank of Troodos, under Mount Papoutsa. It is one of those classic mountain villages that has shed most of its population over the last century but kept its stone-built character: narrow winding alleys, towering walls of local stone, hand-baked clay roof tiles, the works. The medieval church of Timios Prodromos (St John the Baptist) sits in the village centre, and there is a second church of Timios Stavros. The surrounds are heavily planted in vines, hazelnuts, walnuts, olives, and almonds, and the village still produces zivania in the old way. The real draw for walkers is the Madari peak trailhead — Askas is one of the natural launching points for the long ridge walk that runs along the second-highest line of summits on the island, with panoramic views in every direction.
