About
Arsos sits on the slopes of Mount Laona at 850 metres, the largest and possibly the most historically important wine village of the Krasochoria. The hillside is covered in vines — Arsos has been making wine since antiquity, and locals like to trace the village's name back to either the sacred grove (alsos) of Aphrodite or to one of the four towns founded by Ptolemy Philadelphos in honour of Arsinoe. Either way, the deep tradition shows in the lanes: stone houses with traditional viticultural equipment still visible in the courtyards, family wineries running tastings, and a small but excellent Folk Art Museum dedicated to the wine-making craft. The Six Fountains nature trail joins medieval stone fountains along the riverbed and makes a pleasant afternoon walk. Time it right for the end-of-September Grape Feast or November's Feast of Apostle Phillipos, both of which fill the square with food stalls and folk music.
