About

Anogyra is a quiet stone village at 170 metres on the Limassol foothills, famous on the island for one very specific thing: pasteli, the dense carob-syrup sweet that is one of the oldest Cypriot confections and is still made here in the traditional way. The annual Pastelli Festival in September turns the village into an open-air carob workshop with stalls, tastings, and folk music. Beyond pasteli, Anogyra has a Pastelli Museum, a separate Folk Art Museum, an olive press, and a small village winery, all walkable in an hour or two. The Holy Cross village church anchors the square. The settlement has been here since the Neolithic, and the name probably derives either from the anagyris plant that grows in the area or from being the upper ('ano') part of an older village called Gyroi. A lovely afternoon stop on the way between Limassol and Pafos.
