About

Alona is one of the highest villages in Cyprus — 1,200 metres up between the Madari and Papoutsa peaks — and one of the smallest, with a permanent population under 100. The slopes around the village are planted in hazelnut and cherry orchards, and the food tradition is built around them: the village makes outstanding soutzoukos (grape-must sweets strung on threads) and ekmek with local nuts. Zivania production is taken seriously enough that the village hosts an annual Zivania Festival in November, with tastings, traditional stalls, and folk-music sets in the square. Two old churches are worth a look — Panagia Kardakiotissa from the fifteenth century, and Agios Georgios with an 1835 icon of the saint. The nature trail that starts from the village square runs through hazelnut groves with violets and ferns in spring and wild cyclamens in winter. Real altitude, real quiet, and a strong sense of place.
